Hello!!
ARRGH!
I know, you weren't expecting to hear from me again were you?
Well... news news news.
There may be a theatre company setting up shop in Scarborough called... wait for it...
"PURPLE MONKEY".
Guess what, it ain't us. Not at all. So if you see them, stage a naked protest outside one of their shows for dirtying our good (alright... average) name!
Those that enjoyed our amateur production of "Alice in Wonderland" in summer 2005 may be happy to know that Stageworks plan to tour a professional production in Summer 2007, and Wydale Hall is on the proposed venue list.

| With the last night of "A Christmas Carol" behind us, it's summary time. |

Firstly, I just want to say a huge thank you to those that chose to support us, sent us cards, wine, chocolates... brilliant. Made our day in what was easily one of the roughest runs I've ever done. Thank you for coming to see our show, and thank you for the masses of positive feedback you gave us.
So it is with sadness I announce that "A Christmas Carol" was Purple Monkey's last show.
Scarborough is a really odd place. People complain daily that there's nothing to do here. Yet this week, in Scarborough we were the ONLY piece of theatre showing on 4 out of the 5 shows we did. If you wanted to watch theatre Friday or Saturday night, we were it. And it was a good, no, a brilliant show. The actors had worked incredibly hard. The set, props, costumes were excellent. Everyone that came to see this show walked away saying how amazing it was. We had people sending donations backstage to us! (Thank you, whoever you are!)
But sadly our opening night... 22 people in a 280 seat theatre? 46 on the following night?
We've brought Scarborough comedy, drama, classical theatre, adaptations, musicals... pretty much every angle we could wrap our minds around has been covered, but to no avail.
Allan and Craig once joked that if you put a box in the middle of the SJT theatre, and lit it with various coloured lights for 3 hours, people would still pay £12.50 a ticket, because it's the SJT theatre.
So today we'll be emptying the theatre, then begin packing up the studio. The low numbers, low income has just killed us. 7 bloody years we ran for, and we never got funding. 7 bloody years we ran for, and Scarborough never gave us the audience size that we needed, 7 years, and people still said things like "Oh, I don't like going to see new theatre groups."
Insane.
So once again, thank you for those who supported our productions along the way.
Party Hard, Y2K in an Elevator, Guards! Guards!, Maskerade, The Truth, Lords and Ladies, Fur Coat and No Knickers, Pirate! - The Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Alices Adventures in Wonderland, and A Christmas Carol.
See ya.

| The Review for "Christmas Carol." |
[24 Nov 2005|01:10pm] |
-----
"Charles Dickens' story of the miserly businessman who, after a result of a series of ghostly visitations, undergoes a complete change of personality is a perennial favourite on stage and film this time of year.
So it was disheartening to see so many empty seats on the opening night for this faitful adaptation by Jamie McKeller of the classic novel.
Good performances all round throughout,. Rob Lupine is a fine Scrooge, even if he does bear more than a passing resemblance to another Dicken's hero, Mr Pickwick.
However, he handles the transition from meannes to magnanimity superbly, and every sentence he utters is as clear as a bell.
He is ably backed up up by the members of the company playing a variety of roles, the appearences of the three ghosts and dead partner Marley being especially well done.
The atmosphere is nicely created using music, lighting and sound effects, on an effective multipurpose set, and the costumes are spot on.
In fact, all this lacks is an audience who will enjoy a grand tale eloquently told.
Its to be hoped that all the obvious hard work put in by Purple Monkey pays off over the remaining performances."

Review - Mike Park.
So yes, the only real badness was that the numbers were low. So come on Scarborough folks...

| Finally, an update! |
[07 Nov 2005|11:56pm] |
Busy times!
Aside from the wind attempting to remove the roof from the studio, it's business as usual. The show is coming along very well, and we're looking forwards to getting into the theatre in a couple of weeks time.
Tickets are on sale now!!
The show runs 23rd - 26th of November at the YMCA theatre, and the box office number is 01723 506750.
Tonight we played around hair and make up... ( here's a couple of shots of Marley. )
And for good measure here's a grab I lifted out of some film I took on my mobile phone...

It's damn cold!! (But quite seasonable for Christmas time...)

Hello!
We need a male actor to play the part of Mr. Edwards in Christmas Carol. Only in two scenes, so not a lot of rehearsals required.

Although all the acting roles in Christmas Carol are now cast (except a small role in act one, and Teeny Tiny Timmy) I'm looking for people that want to help on the production side of things.
Lighting Hair and make up Stage hands Costume Props
Anything you think you can lend a hand to. Call me (Jamie McKeller) on 07834 387587. We have a potentially amazing show here, and you could help us bring it to life.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of cheap black fabrics? I need... 35 X 2.5 metres, and it needs to be fairly durable. I've scoured ze internet, but anyone that has ever used the internet for anything specific will already know I've failed. Hard.

Alice in Wonderland is an open air production.
A few people have asked in which part of Wydale Hall it will take place, and been surprised when they discover it's outdoors.

The card guards are painted.
The Hatter's tea party has... a teapot.
The Duchess has the most terrifying hat in the world.
Bubble machines work.
Microphones tested.
Are... we ready?
Opening night in less than a week, and I have the jitters. We did a full run last night, and it was patchy. Solidly patchy, I will say. I certainly enjoyed it, but it needs to tidy up, which it will. We have 4 more full runs of the show this week, and it was only the last two scenes where things started to hiccup, and the second time we ran the last scene it went like a well oiled raccoon.
Tickets. Tickets. Buy your tickets.
They're available on the door, and that's where most people are buying them from so it seems. We also have guests that are staying at the Hall coming to see the show, so at least we're guaranteed an audience every night!
Right... I'm off to paint something. Who knows what, I shall find out when I start to paint it!

I have never missed a show as much as I miss Little Shop of Horrors.
All the usual stresses aside, all the panics and frustrations... it was the best damn show I've ever been in. No exceptions. The feedback we're getting is mind boggling. Rumour has it the McCarthy theatre, and Alan Ayckbourn may enter the Monkeydom soon... not to mention the fact that cast members are getting stopped in the street by people wanting to congratulate them.
All the cast rule. Rule hard.
I miss playing Seymour like... like nothing I can describe. I had total doubts about it, what with him been a stereotypical tiny guy... Jewish... American... but people tell me I did it well, and when I think back to it, listen to the soundtrack... I bloody miss it.
Damn it.
Anyone got a theatre for us? We'll bring you an awesome production of Little Shop of Horrors.
